A cooling tower is a specialized heat exchanger in which two fluids (air and water) are brought into direct contact with each other to affect the transfer of heat. In the "spray-filled" tower shown in the figure below, this is acomplished by spraying a flowing mass of water in a rain-like pattern, through which an upward moving mass of cool air is produced by a powerful suction fan.
